Chapel at Woodlawn Funeral Home and CemeteryLocated on Virginia Beach Boulevard, our red brick funeral home is a comfortable place to start the healing process. The light and bright chapel has beautiful stained-glass windows and pew seating for more than 275 guests. Flexible spaces allow families to host visitations and catered receptions large and small.

Personalized memorials that celebrate life

Celebration of life venue for services, gatherings and receptions at Woodlawn Funeral Home & Memorial GardensThe professionals at Woodlawn Funeral Home & Crematory pride themselves on asking good questions and anticipating needs. We specialize in creating services that deeply reflect your personality or that of your loved one. Working with your funeral director, you can select readings, speakers and songs, and create meaningful moments. A funeral can include military honors, masonic rites or religious leadership. We’re here to share our expertise and help you celebrate in the way that fits your family’s traditions and preferences.

We are happy to arrange catering—from a breakfast buffet to a sit-down dinner, cake and coffee to a crab boil. We can decorate virtually any way you choose, creating a fisherman’s paradise, a sports fan’s dream, an artist’s studio or a fashionista’s closet. We also provide honorable and distinguished veterans services.

From a butterfly release to a barbecue, a fireworks display to a military salute, the list of what we can do is nearly endless. Start with a story—we’ll take it from there, arranging every detail from venue to food to music and more.

Cremation services at Woodlawn

Unique Garden Feature at Woodlawn Memorial GardensNot everyone knows that there are many cremation options. If you are interested in cremation, the funeral home team can explain the process and the different memorial and burial options. From a direct cremation without a service or a witness to a full funeral service before or after the cremation and more, we help you understand this increasingly common choice.

For families who choose the time-honored tradition of cremation, our full-service funeral home has a private crematory on the property. This gives Woodlawn Funeral Home complete control of a cremation from start to finish and means your loved one never leaves our care. If desired, cremated remains may be buried or placed in a niche at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

Your caring provider

Our team members are committed to serving you with dignity, honor and respect. Please give us a call if you need immediate assistance planning a funeral or if you would like more information about making funeral arrangements in advance.

Woodlawn Memorial Gardens cemetery

Overhead view of Grounds at Woodlawn Funeral Home and CemeteryWith more than 75 acres of rolling green lawns and mature trees, including 40 undeveloped acres for future generations, Woodlawn is a peaceful final resting place and provides families with permanent memorials to return to year after year.

The cemetery offers a broad range of burial options, from traditional ground plots to cremation niches to mausoleum crypts. Large family estates and private family mausoleums are options for families who desire them, and we are able to combine in-ground burial for casketed and cremated remains.

Beautiful gardens and a chapel mausoleum

Mausoleum at Woodlawn Funeral Home and CemeteryThe cemetery is home to 17 gardens, including many religious sections—King David’s Garden, the Garden of St. Luke, the Garden of the Ten Commandments, to name a few—and three veterans sections. A dedicated Masonic Garden honors members of that brotherhood. A section dedicated to Orthodox Jews allows members of that faith to rest together.

When it comes to memorialization, there are also many options. Selections include flat memorials, upright granite monuments, ledgers, mausoleum plates, memorial benches and more. A new mixed-use estate garden allows for families to be laid to rest together, whether they choose traditional ground burial or cremation burial. The area, near the middle of the cemetery, includes private hedge estates, semiprivate estates, family columbaria, a community columbarium and cremation benches.

Situated in the center of the cemetery, the elegant chapel mausoleum offers indoor and outdoor crypt spaces for single caskets and cremation niches for one to six cremations. With its beautiful, modern architecture and glorious stained-glass art illustrating “Psalm 23,” it is a revered space in which to inter and visit a loved one. Small committal services can be held inside the mausoleum.

History

Overhead view of Grounds at Woodlawn Funeral Home and CemeteryEstablished as a private, family-owned cemetery in 1958, Woodlawn Memorial Gardens encompasses 75 acres between Virginia Beach Boulevard and Newtown Road in Norfolk. When the founders of memorial park were planning their cemetery, they turned to 19th-century rural park cemeteries for inspiration. They envisioned a place with winding, tree-lined roads and lush gardens designed not only for burials, but also for family gatherings, picnics, reading and reflection. The first memorial took place at the cemetery in 1960; today the property provides a place for thousands of families to remember and honor their loved ones, as well as take walks and be with nature.

In 1996, Ken Bell and Jane Garland opened a funeral home and crematory on the grounds of Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, creating a place for families to plan funerals, cremations and burials at convenient sister locations.

In 2018, both funeral home and cemetery became part of the Dignity Memorial® network. As North America's largest group of funeral, cremation and cemetery service providers, the Dignity Memorial brand is your assurance of quality, value, caring service and exceptional customer satisfaction.
